Tips for planning a caravan holiday
A caravaning holiday is the epitome of freedom. The open road, a mobile home, and the chance to go wherever you please. The BBC have even called caravans a “British Love Affair” and made a documentary about it. Of course, you need to plan these things, and it’s important to get all your information ready before you hit the road, so your trip is smooth and without bumps.
Where can you go? Anywhere! Simply grab a map and go wherever your heart takes you – within reason!
So, how can you plan your dream caravanning break?
Research, research, research!
You can’t just decide to park up and stay the night wherever you fancy. Whilst caravaning is freedom, there are rules you need to follow! Make sure you look into these, pertaining particularly to the place where you’re going. Internet forums are a good place to head for honest and up to date information, however be aware that many people’s opinions often come out on these sites, and they’re not always 100% accurate! When you know your route, check the red tape.
Insurance!
Shop around for adequate insurance for your holiday, and take into account that you need something a little more comprehensive than bog-standard travel insurance. Make sure what you have covers you for the duration of your trip, and for exactly what you need, and make sure you carry all documents with you whilst travelling, including your driving licence. Of course, if you’re heading off overseas, make sure your driving license is valid for the country you’re travelling to, as well as your passport details etc. Various companies provide specialist caravan insurance.
Check where you can stay
Like we’ve just touched on, you can’t park up at the side of the road and decide you’re going to lay your head for the night, and you need to go to a proper campsite, where you can set up home and put up your awning etc. Fees vary for these sites, but they’re relatively cheap, and you’ll find many have modern facilities, such as wifi and swimming pools. Pick one that suits your needs and budget, and if possible, book in advance, as you may find if you just rock up, you won’t be accommodated during busy times. The Independent put together a list of the 50 best camping sites and many of these are also suitable for caravans.
Think safety
Have you ever towed a caravan before? If not, get some practice before you leave. It feels different to drive when you’re pulling a caravan, however you can easily get used to it. Having said that, bear this in mind when you’re planning your route, especially if you’re not used to it. Check the road types and quality etc, and also that your vehicle is up to towing. Get your vehicle serviced and checked well before you head off, and get everything sorted out and fixed if there are any minor problems. Educate yourself about safe towing (and practice!) before you set out. There are lots of youtube videos and instructions for safe towing.
Think sensible!
You wouldn’t head off on a road trip carrying tons of money and a lot of valuables would you? So don’t think it’s any different with a caravanning holiday. Yes, you have a mobile home attached to your car, but it’s nowhere near as secure as a house, so carry only what is necessary and use a safety deposit box for your money and valuables. It’s not worth the risk of having your things stolen or lost.
All this kind of holiday really takes is planning, and if you make sure everything is covered, doubled checked, and sorted pre-departure, then the only thing you have to worry about is how much fun you’re going to have – freedom!
