Best Things to Do in Patagonia, Chile

On the west and southernmost tip of South America is the Chilean region of Patagonia. Here the Andes slope down into the Pacific Ocean and human habitation dates back thousands of years.

If you want to see some of the most beautiful scenic views on the planet, then a trip to Patagonian Chile is a great choice for the travelling adventurer. You will not only find desert vistas, grasslands, and forests but also awe-inspiring volcanoes and glacial scenery. It’s a hiker’s dream. You can trek through a national park, visit penguin colonies, or even brave a trip around the fearsome Cape Hope.

Mount Hudson

The site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the twentieth century is the Hudson volcano. A glacier covers the slopes of the mountain, and the caldera at the summit is the source of modern volcanic activity.

Magdalena Island

This features a well-marked trail that visitors can take to follow the path of the penguin colonies. Trips are only available for part of the year, so be sure to check before travelling.

Patagonian expedition race

If you are into outdoor pursuits, perhaps you might like to watch this annual endurance adventure race, which takes place in the remote wilderness of Chilean Patagonia. Arranged to raise awareness of the fragile environment in the region, it is known as the ‘Race to the End of the World’. It is a 10-day challenge of disciplines including orienteering, mountain biking, trekking and sea kayaking.

Cape Horn

Known as a ‘sailors graveyard’, Cape Horn is notorious for its hazardous sailing conditions. It was once the main trading route between the Atlantic and Pacific islands prior to the construction of the Panama Canal. If you’re feeling brave enough to embark on a cruise around the Horn, it promises to be an awe-inspiring event. Though the ferocious winds and turbulent seas make this only a choice for a sporting few, you can always take a trip by air; it might set your wallet back, but it promises to be a smoother ride.

Torres del Paine

One of the largest and most popular free travel destinations in Chile, this national park includes mountains, glaciers, protected forests, and vividly coloured lakes and rivers. Designated a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO it features impressive cliffs and towering granite peaks.

Puerto Natales

This coastal fishing port makes an ideal base for exploring the Torres del Paine National Park. Try the local seafood or traditional Patagonian meat while enjoying views of the nearby glaciers.
